Client Overview

Environment Canada

Environment Canada’s Current Analysis and Modeling Division uses the energy-economy modeling tool ENERGY 2020 to provide analysis and policy advice on the climate change and clean air issues.  The model is used to analyze policy options and scenarios related to climate change.  ENERGY 2020 provides information on the impact of environmental policies in all sectors and regions of the economy in Canada and, more specifically, the impact on Canada’s environment particularly through greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria air contaminant (CAC) emissions.  ENERGY 2020 is used to support the development and to analyze the impact of different, current, future, and potential clean air and GHG reduction policies.

California Air Resources Board (ARB)

SSI is using ENERGY 2020 to assist the California ARB simulate and evaluate the effects of multi-sector market-based compliance mechanisms designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in California.  California ARB is committed to using ENERGY 2020 for analysis of the Assembly Bill 32 Scoping Plan.

Western Climate Initiative (WCI)

ENERGY 2020 is being used to model the impacts of more than 30 different scenarios of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions on WCI partners.  The WCI partners include Arizona, British Columbia, California, Manitoba, Montana, New Mexico, Ontario, Oregon, Quebec, Utah, and Washington.

Bonneville Power Administration (BPA)

SSI is working with BPA to model near-term and long-term portfolio options available along with their potential impacts on wholesale power rates and various associated market, fuel and reliability risks associated with meeting legal requirements to serve load.  SSI is analyzing the available portfolio options and quantified the risk with these portfolios.

Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT)

Through the use of ENERGY 2020, SSI assisted Hawaii DBEDT fulfill its legislative mandate under Hawaii’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction law (Act 234) by simulating Hawaii greenhouse gas emissions, identifying and recommending emission reduction measures, identifying, evaluating and developing cost-benefit analysis models.

National Energy Board (NEB)

SSI is using ENERGY 2020 to produce an energy demand and supply and emissions forecast for Canada.  SSI’s role includes model development, training, and general support.
